History of the
Painted Picture Process

The term ‘Painted Picture’ dates back to 1998 when Brian Scudamore, founder of 1-800-Got-Junk?, was brainstorming about business growth with other members of Entrepreneurs’ Organization – including Dan Lionello, Kuno Kurschner, and Cameron Herald. Brian spent a few days at his parents’ summer cottage imagining the possibilities and wrote his first Painted Picture.

Brian focused on what 1-800-Got-Junk? would look, act, and feel like five years in the future. He used that Painted Picture (along with several others) to communicate the vision and keep the team on track.

Dan worked with Brain on his evolving Painted Pictures for several years. He was inspired to create the Painted Picture Process. He designed a way for other entrepreneurs to create Painted Pictures and brought it to the public around 2008.

Dan has since expanded the process to include frameworks for personal life, professional life, companies, and management teams. Hundreds of leaders have created their own Painted Pictures with his guidance.

And what happened after Brain’s first Painted Picture? He revisited it five years later and 96% of his vision was realized!

Brian and his team grew 1-800-Got-Junk? from $1 million a year in revenue to more than $500 million a year in revenue. Today, Brian continues to build great businesses and give back through his books and work in the community. Follow his journey at brianscudamore.com.
